Rosenborg Castle – 1990 Desiree Hans Christian Andersen Christmas Plate, Cake Plate

The motif of this 1990 Desiree Christmas plate from the Porcelain Factory Desiree, also known as Désirée Denmark, Svend Jensen of Denmark, Old Copenhagen Blue is Rosenborg Castle which is found in the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale Godfather’s Picture Book. In the fairytale “Godfather’s Picture Book” the writer Hans Christian Andersen mentions the birth of the Danish King Christian 4. In his time King Christian 4. built many admirable buildings. Among these buildings we have to mention Rosenborg Castle. The King wanted a “summerhouse” and the first stones to this house were placed in 1606. Since that the castle has been extended several times. King Christian 4. died in this castle. Today the castle is no longer used as a royal residence. Instead it houses the Crown Jewels and the Danish Crown Regalia. At the museum it is also possible to see the history about the Danish kings through 300 years.
